The Studio
Pinnaroo Studio is a Western Australian sculpture practice founded by artist Piotr Pyrchla, focused on the creation of large-scale, site-specific stone works for public and architectural environments. The practice operates from an industrial sized workshop in Wanneroo, designed to accommodate large-scale stone fabrication. The space enables the handling and carving of substantial material volumes, supporting works at architectural scale. Works are developed in collaboration with Architects, Landscape designers and Local Authorities, with a focus on durability and integration within built environments. Pinnaroo Studio is insured for Public and Product Liability up to $20 million.
Practice / Philosophy
The studio works primarily with Sandstone, Granite and Marble, but also with reconstituted limestone and concrete — often prioritising Western Australian stone.
Each work is developed through a direct and intuitive engagement with the material, guided by an understanding that every stone is inherently unique. This approach focuses balancing monumentality with restraint, and permanence with sensitivity.
Central to the practice is the belief that sculpture should be experienced physically. Works are designed to be touched, occupied and interacted with — blurring the boundary between sculpture, architecture and urban infrastructure.
Each work is developed through direct engagement with the material, allowing the natural characteristics of the stone to inform the final form. This process balances precision with intuition.
Piotr Pyrchla (biography)
Pyrchla’s practice is grounded in a family apprenticeship under European-trained Master Stonemasons and Sculptors Edward and Aleksander Pyrchla. This lineage of craftsmanship, rooted in traditional stone carving techniques, informs a deep material understanding and a commitment to durability and precision.
Pyrchla’s Grandfather, Edward Pyrchla was trained in Zakopane, Poland, and contributed greatly to the reconstruction of the historic City of Gdańsk before emigrating to Australia — establishing a legacy of stonework that continued through his Son Aleksander and continues through his grandson at the studio today.
Alongside this, Pyrchla holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Western Australia, enabling a considered approach to site, scale and integration within complex built environments.
Pyrchla’s work represents a convergence of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art — producing sculptures that are not only expressive, but structurally and materially embedded within the environments they inhabit.
Pyrchla is a member of the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) and Artsource.
